FAQ

What is a rel attribute?

The rel attribute describes the relationship between the current page and a linked page. It’s used for SEO hints (like nofollow) and for security on target=_blank links (like noopener and noreferrer).

What is the difference between dofollow and nofollow?

“Dofollow” is an informal term for links that do not include nofollow, sponsored, or ugc. These links can pass ranking signals. “Nofollow/tagged” links include one of those tokens and are treated as hints by search engines.

Why are noopener and noreferrer important?

When a link opens in a new tab (target=_blank), missing rel=noopener can allow the new page to control window.opener, which is a known security risk. noreferrer also prevents sending a referrer in many browsers.

What does sponsored mean?

rel=sponsored marks paid or affiliate links. It helps search engines understand that the link exists due to compensation.

What does ugc mean?

rel=ugc indicates user-generated content links (comments, forum posts, profiles). It’s useful when you don’t editorially vouch for every outbound link created by users.

Why does the tool show “outbound dofollow present” as an issue?

This warning means the page has external links without nofollow/sponsored/ugc. That’s not always wrong — but during audits it’s a quick signal to review paid links, comment spam risk, and link hygiene.

Why can results differ from what I see in the browser?

Some sites render links via JavaScript or change HTML for bots, regions, or user-agents. This checker analyzes the HTML it receives from the server (after redirects), so JS-inserted links may not be included.

How does the “Download Excel” file work?

The export generates a simple HTML table saved with a .xls extension. Excel opens it normally. It includes rows for each report URL and each external link: type (Do-Follow/No-Follow), link text, href, and rel.
